This paper focuses on the new spatial concepts, particularly public, community & recreational, that need to be associated with the high rise residential architecture that symbolizes the change in the idea of housing, particularly high rise residential towers in A & B Class cities in India. There is no denying that the whole concept of housing has changed dramatically in the last 15-20 years. This change can be attributed to the growth of the professional class & change in the lifestyle of the people, together with the intention of architects and planners to ambitiously come up with iconic architectural marvels. This has had a huge impact on the residential architecture, specially in developing countries.
Looking Beyond Conventional Buildings
The paper essentially presents an insight to the kind of public spaces that existed in our cities in the past, how they served their purpose then and what (if any) are the reasons for their redundancy/decreased utility in present urban scenarios. All this, to understand what criterion were considered while designing them (e.g. the case of Jaipur) and what lessons they have in store for us. It then discusses the kind of urban public spaces that are needed in the present urban context, considering the dramatic change in the composition and the functioning of the Indian cities standing in the new millennium, under the shadow of the vast challenges faced by them such as migration, pollution, shrinkage & sprawl, urban density and lastly, what factors need to be considered to have an optimum development of our cities towards a sustainable future.

In this paper, we explore the need to have a clear and measurable definition of Net-Zero Energy Buildings: what it means, why this definition is needed, and how we can progress towards the ZEB goal, all of this while emphasizing on the role and importance of the building envelope and related building services in achieving the same.
